General Information about the conference
The Historical Centre of the city of Oaxaca and the archaeological site of Monte Albán were registered on the List of World Heritage on the 11th of December 1987. Commemorating the XXV anniversary of this event, the city is preparing itself for another great event: to host the XII WORLD CONGRESS OF THE ORGANIZATION OF WORLD HERITAGE CITIES.
In response to the Municipal Development Plan 2011-2013 in regards to Cultural Heritage Conservation; this forum surpasses the established expectation, because it will position Oaxaca de Juárez as the “World Cultural Capital” for the year 2013, by converting it into the transmitter of the agreements reached in terms of Cultural Heritage Conservation and Urban Sustainability.
Oaxaca de Juárez will receive with the quality that characterizes it, the representative leaders of more than 230 cities that have a Historical Centre registered on the List of World Heritage of the UNESCO, during the Congress programmed from the 19th to the 22th of November 2013.
For the organization of this event, the Mayor preceding C. Luis Julián Ugartechea Begué, has promoted innovative elements such as:
Congress of Mexico.
In correspondence with the support received by World Heritage Mexican cities, to achieve the Congress in its last meeting in Sintra, Portugal; this event has been declared to belong to Mexico and will be converted into a window to the world where the cities of: Querétaro, Mexico, Morelia, Campeche, Tlacotalpan, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Puebla and Oaxaca will have the opportunity to show their qualities.
Organizing Committee included.
With the participation of businessmen, public and private institutions, as well as collegiate organizations and civil associations, it was decided that the Organizing Committee would take care of aspects related to logistics, infrastructure, finances and the scientific framework. In the same manner, the “Historical Oaxaca” Civil Association was created with the mission of monitoring the proper implementation of human and material resources for the organization of the event.
Active Participation of the population.
During the XII World Congress of the OWHC, the population will have access to the various world-class cultural events, thanks to the fusion achieved with the “Novo” and “Instrumenta Oaxaca” art festivals, which will take place at the same time, therefore multiplying the social impact
Thanks to the invaluable participation of theUniversity of “Benito Juárez” of Oaxaca, the possibility for young people from local and national universities to participate has opened up, allowing them to share their experiences in “Case Studies” related to Cultural Heritage Conservation and Urban Sustainability.
“Road to Oaxaca” Program.
With resources from the OWCH, this workshop will be financed the 4th, 5th and 6th of June 2013, in the city of Córdoba, España, which will have as its main topic “Heritage Management linked to Sustainable Development”.
The aim is to bring together successful stories from the different heritage cities, which may be applicable in other cities, if adopted as OWHC Institutional Programs.
The success of the selection of the venue for the workshop, as well as the interest shown by member cities of the organization, have created a favourable atmosphere for its development and a positive siting of Oaxaca as the next host of the XII World Congress of the OWHC.
